Car Dealers Now Embrace Internet Marketing

Car dealers embrace the Web
Before browsing at a new car showroom, most Americans browse online. Almost 90 percent of consumers turn to the Internet as a research tool -- in addition to traditional sources such as newspapers and magazines -- although only about 30 percent complete a sales transaction online, auto industry analysts say, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes this week. "People think they can click a button and a vehicle magically appears in their driveway, and that's just not the case," said Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor for Edmunds.com, one of the most popular sites for car buyers. "Online car buying means you will use the Internet to help in a number of ways to make a purchase. But you still can't test drive a car on the Internet," he added. That is among the reasons that dealers have embraced the Internet. "The better informed a consumer can be before [he or she comes] into the showroom means we will have to spend less time telling [him or her] the basics about the car," said Daniel C. Biondi, owner of Biondi Motor Co. in Monroeville, which sells Lincoln, Mercury and Mitsubishi products.

For the third week running, stories about mobile and mobile video have led the news in the industry. A new study from Knowledge Networks revealed that 66% of Americans who have broadband access at home have iPods, cell phones or laptops with video capabilities. Cell phones with video service have nearly doubled in ownership, while ownership of video iPods has grown by a factor of nearly five. Net ownership of these two devices and/or laptops has increased almost 50%, from 45% in 2006 to 66% this year - contributing to a doubling (21% to 43%) in net use of these mobile technologies to view video during the same time frame.

Nielsen's latest Three Screen Report, which measures video consumption of Americans across TV, the internet and mobile, shows that mobile and online videoconsumption was up significantly in the second quarter of 2009 from Q2 08. The mobile video audience jumped 70%, while time spent watching online video increased 46%, or by 59 minutes. And the desire to watch live TV on mobile devices is strong among U.S. consumers. More than one in five (21%) U.S. adults who have cellphones or PDAs are currently interested in watching live TV on these mobile devices, according to data from Mediamark Research & Intelligence.

Gartner expects that global spending on mobile advertising will leap 74% this year, to $913.5 million; mobile ad spending is expected to surpass $13 billion by 2013. The Asia-Pacific region, North America and Europe will lead growth, the report indicates.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is hoping its new mobile phone software, to be launched in October, will revive its fortunes in the market for smart phones.

Knowem.com is High Value Social Media Marketing Tool

Recently I discovered an amazingly useful online tool for Social Media Marketing purposes. While reading “The Social Media Bible” section on securing a business (dealership) name, the author referenced www.Knowem.com which in the past I had used solely for inquiring as to whether or not a dealer’s name was available as a profile and URL within over 100 User Generated Content websites. The book pointed me to a couple of fee based services provided by the Knowem site that are very useful and which I had been previously unaware of.

First, Knowem will register your dealer’s name at over 100 Web 2.0 UGC sites for a fee of $67.50, and send you the confirmation links within a 24 hour period. I went ahead and signed up to secure my name as both user ID and URL extension.

Not only did Know deliver on their promise, but I also discovered a wealth of useful Web 2.0 sites as I went through the confirmation emails and clicked on the links each contained as a means of verifying that I had authorized my enrollment. What is amazing is that the Knowem team got past over 100 CAPTCHA validations. I found out that they actually have real people doing the account setups! The vision is of a sweatshop filled with 10 year olds in Mumbai, India…. Not so, Knowem claims to use the North American equivalent; part time college and graduate students!

The second Knowem service I enrolled in is their maintenance service. For about 20 bucks a month the Knowem team continues to register your dealership or name as an ongoing service with each of the new Social Networks, UGC and Web 2.0 sites as they are created. So far, the service has exceeded my expectations and been amazingly effective as an ongoing solution the social media land grabs that happen daily.
